Steps to a Missouri statewide license
  1. Qualify. 12,000 hours installing equipment and wiring, or a shorter route: 10,000 hours plus a DOL-approved apprenticeship journeyman certificate, 8,000 hours plus an associate’s degree, or 4,000 supervising hours plus a four-year electrical engineering degree. Carry $500,000 in liability insurance.
  2. Apply to OSEC. OSEC decides eligibility, not PSI.
  3. Book the exam. After OSEC approves you, you get instructions to pay PSI and schedule.
  4. Pass and get licensed. Missouri cities and counties must recognize the statewide license in place of a local contractor license. They can still require permits and local bonds.

Missouri electrical contractor exam questions

Do I need the Missouri statewide license? Not always. Under RSMo 324.920.4, you can keep working where you hold the required local license, or where no local license is required. The statewide license helps if you work in many cities and counties.

Which NEC edition is on the Missouri exam? You choose the 2020 or 2023 NEC. This course teaches the 2020 NEC, so bring that edition.

Is it open book, and can I use tabs? Yes to both. Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are fine. Post-its and handwritten notes are not.

How many questions, and what is passing? 100 scored questions in 4.5 hours. You need 75 correct.

Who gives the exam? PSI, for Missouri’s Office of Statewide Electrical Contractors, at centers in Missouri and Kansas.

How long should I study? 6–8 weeks, about an hour a night.

“I am very proud to have passed the 1st time. I appreciate your help and guidance with the exam prep and found it really helpful.”
