Tennessee Electrical Exam Prep Self-Study Bundle (2017 NEC)

$495.00
Available as:
Prepare for the Tennessee electrician exam with JCR's complete 2017 NEC self-study exam prep bundle.

Prepare for the Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) exam — an open-book test of the 2017 NEC where code navigation speed decides who passes — with the same full bundle of materials used in our classroom course. Forty questions, a passing score of 29 correct (72.5%), and no board pre-approval or experience file required to sit for it: the exam itself is the gate between you and pulling permits on projects up to $25,000 across most of Tennessee.

Candidates who fail don't fail on knowledge — they fail on finding answers in an 800-page codebook against the clock. That skill is exactly what this bundle trains. Preparing for the full CE Electrical Contractor license instead? The trade exam runs on the same 2017 NEC — this bundle is your code preparation for that track too.

This bundle includes the same core JCR curriculum materials used by our classroom students with a 93% pass rate:

  • JCR Exam Prep Manual (2017 NEC edition): a unit-by-unit study path with a six-week schedule, video prompts, guided practice, and answer keys. It covers NEC navigation, test-taking strategy, Ohm's Law, electrical formulas, ampacity, overcurrent protection, dwelling and service calculations, grounding and bonding, boxes, raceways, conduit fill, motors, appliances, special occupancies, and math review.
  • Study videos: step-by-step instruction across the major exam topics, so you can follow the manual, pause, rewind, and revisit difficult calculations as often as needed.
  • Realistic mock exam questions: practice on paper with the Mock Exam Booklet and online with JCR's digital practice tools so you can build code-search speed, test your timing, and identify weak areas before exam day.
  • JCR code book tabs: permanent tabs — the only kind allowed in the exam room — that help you move quickly to heavily tested NEC articles, tables, and sections.

Know before you register

  • New exam provider: as of July 1, 2026, Tennessee exams run through Prov, not PSI. PSI is finishing only already-scheduled exams through September 2026, and PSI-era reference books remain usable through January 1, 2027. Register and get the current Candidate Information Bulletin at Prov.
  • Bring your codebook: the exam is open book — 2017 NEC, permanent tabs only, no writing in references during the test.
  • Check your city: Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis/Shelby County, and roughly two dozen other municipalities run their own electrician programs and don't accept the state LLE. See our Tennessee exam prep page ->
  • Memphis/Shelby County students: The Tennessee state LLE and CE Electrical Contractor exams use the 2017 NEC, but Memphis/Shelby County runs its own local electrician program and uses the 2020 NEC. If you are preparing for a Memphis/Shelby County electrical exam, do not buy this 2017 NEC Tennessee bundle. Use JCR's Electrical Exam Prep Self-Study Bundle (2020 NEC) instead.

Tennessee Self-Study Exam Prep FAQ

Quick answers before you order.

Which licenses is this bundle built for?

The Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) exam and the code portion of the CE Electrical Contractor trade exam — both based on the 2017 NEC and administered by Prov. It focuses on code navigation, calculations, practice questions, mock exam work, and code book organization.

Do I need experience or pre-approval to take the LLE exam?

No. You register with the exam provider, study, and test. After passing, submit the LLE application to the Board for Licensing Contractors — the license fee is $50 and it renews every two years, with no continuing education requirement.

Where is the LLE accepted?

Most of Tennessee, for electrical projects under $25,000. Exempt jurisdictions run their own electrician licensing and do not accept the state LLE — including Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis/Shelby County, Hamilton County, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Johnson City, and Kingsport. Note that Memphis/Shelby County tests on the 2020 NEC — a different codebook than the state exam.

Is the exam still through PSI?

No. Prov administers Tennessee contractor and LLE exams as of July 1, 2026. PSI is only completing exams already scheduled, through September 2026, and PSI-era reference books remain usable through January 1, 2027.

Is this the same as taking a live JCR exam prep workshop?

It uses the same core JCR curriculum materials, including the manual, video lessons, practice questions, mock exam access, and code book tabs. The live workshops add classroom instruction and direct instructor support.

How long should I study?

Most successful students study for 4-8 weeks. Start with the manual and video lessons, then use the mock exam and digital practice tools to find weak spots and build speed before exam day.

What code book do I need?

This bundle is built around the 2017 NEC. Your exam follows the code edition named in the current candidate bulletin, so confirm that edition and any rules for allowed references, tabs, or highlighting before you study and again before test day.
