Tennessee Electrical Exam Prep Self-Study

Prepare for the Tennessee Limited Licensed Electrician (LLE) exam with JCR's complete self-study exam prep bundle — the same materials used in our classroom courses since 1985.

This bundle includes our exam prep manual, online study videos, codebook tabs, printed mock exams, and digital practice tools built around the 2017 NEC — the edition Tennessee's LLE and CE contractor exams test on.

The exam is 40 questions, open book, passing at 29 correct — and there's no pre-approval or experience file required to sit for it. The test itself is the whole gate. Walk in ready the first time.

Most successful students study between 4–8 weeks.

The Tennessee LLE exam at a glance

40 questions, open book (2017 NEC, permanent tabs only, no writing in references), passing score 29 correct (72.5%). No board pre-approval required. As of July 1, 2026 the exam is administered by Prov — PSI is only completing already-scheduled exams through September 2026. After passing, apply to the Board for Licensing Contractors; the license is $50 and renews every two years, with no continuing education requirement.

Where the LLE works — and where it doesn't

The LLE covers electrical projects under $25,000 where issuing agents accept it — most of Tennessee. But exempt jurisdictions run their own electrician programs and do not accept the state LLE, including Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis/Shelby County, Hamilton County, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Johnson City, and Kingsport. Working in one of those? Contact that city or county's codes office. (Memphis/Shelby County tests on the 2020 NEC — a different codebook.)

Memphis/Shelby County students: The Tennessee state LLE and CE Electrical Contractor exams use the 2017 NEC, but Memphis/Shelby County runs its own local electrician program and uses the 2020 NEC. If you are preparing for a Memphis/Shelby County electrical exam, do not buy this 2017 NEC Tennessee bundle. Use JCR's Electrical Exam Prep Self-Study Bundle (2020 NEC) instead.
Bigger projects: the CE Electrical Contractor license

Work over $25,000 requires a Contractor license with an electrical classification — a trade exam (also on the 2017 NEC) plus the Tennessee Business & Law exam, both through Prov, along with financial statements and insurance. This bundle prepares you for the code side of that exam as well.

FAQ

What NEC edition? The 2017 NEC for the state LLE and CE contractor trade exams. Local programs differ — Memphis/Shelby County uses the 2020 NEC.

Do I need experience to take the LLE exam? No — no pre-approval or experience verification is required to sit for it.

Does Tennessee have LLE reciprocity? No — out-of-state electricians must be licensed in Tennessee for LLE-scope work. (Certain contractor trade-exam waivers exist with neighboring states on the CE track.)

Are my PSI-era books still good? Yes — reference books from the PSI era remain usable at the exam through January 1, 2027. Check the current Prov bulletin before test day.
