Pennsylvania does not issue one statewide electrician license. Philadelphia requires its own Electrical Contractor License and currently uses ICC Exam 211, an open-book 2020 NEC examination.

Common questions

Is there a Pennsylvania statewide electrician license?

No. Pennsylvania electrician licensing is generally local. This page is specifically for Philadelphia ICC Exam 211 and the City’s contractor-license process.

What experience does Philadelphia require?

The City currently requires at least four years of electrical employment for a properly licensed company. Approved electrical education may substitute for part of that experience within the stated limits.

Do I need continuing education before applying?

Yes. Philadelphia currently requires at least eight hours of qualifying NFPA 70 coursework completed during the 12 months before initial application.

Does passing ICC 211 automatically issue the license?

No. Passing is one requirement. The City also reviews experience, insurance, tax compliance, business registrations, education, and the application.
