Maryland Electrical License Reciprocity (2026): VA, DC, DE and WV

Maryland electrical license reciprocity - JCR Productions

Maryland's electrical license reciprocates with Delaware, DC, Virginia and West Virginia. Reciprocity lets you skip the Maryland Master or Journeyperson exam, and no other Maryland exam is required. Delaware masters need 5 years licensed, and West Virginia masters need 2. You still send a letter of good standing, a letter from the board in your home state confirming your license. For masters, it must show you passed an exam back home. Masters also need $300,000 general liability plus $100,000 property damage insurance.

What to send the Maryland Board

  • Application: the online Reciprocal Master application or Reciprocal Journeyperson application.
  • Letter of good standing from your home board. For a master, it must say you got the license by exam.
  • A copy of your current license.
  • Insurance (masters): a certificate showing at least $300,000 general liability and $100,000 property damage per occurrence. An umbrella policy doesn't count. Name the State of Maryland and the Board as certificate holder. See the Board's insurance notice.
  • Deadline: upload every document within 30 days of applying. Missing papers mean denial and no refund.
  • Fee: $25 for a master license, $18.50 for a journeyperson (fee schedule).
  • Resident agent: if you don't live or keep an office in Maryland, name a Maryland resident agent.

Do you still need a county license?

Maryland's Master and Journeyperson licenses are statewide. Counties and cities can still make you register before you pull a permit.

Out-of-state masters must get a local license within 60 days. It's issued by the county where you'll work or where your resident agent lives.

Where a Maryland license won't help

  • County exam turned into a state license: the Board says it can't be used for reciprocity in another state or DC.
  • Journeyperson earned by apprenticeship, not exam: DC and Virginia's universal route both want a license earned by exam.
  • Montana: it rates Maryland licenses as not equal to its own at any level.
  • North Carolina and Kentucky: neither lists Maryland as a partner.

Maryland reciprocity questions

Does Maryland have electrical reciprocity with Virginia?

Yes, both ways for masters. Maryland accepts Virginia masters and journeymen, and Virginia accepts Maryland masters. A Maryland journeyperson moving to Virginia applies through Universal License Recognition instead.

Can I use my Virginia journeyman license in Maryland?

Yes. Maryland gives a Journeyperson license to Virginia journeymen licensed by exam or through an apprenticeship with 576 classroom and 8,000 work hours. Send a letter of good standing and a copy of your license with the reciprocal journeyperson application. Journeypersons don't need insurance.

What insurance does a reciprocal master need in Maryland?

At least $300,000 general liability and $100,000 property damage per occurrence. An umbrella policy doesn't count. Upload the certificate within 30 days of applying.

Does Maryland accept a West Virginia journeyman license?

No. Maryland's West Virginia agreement covers masters only, and they need 2 years licensed. West Virginia journeymen take the Maryland PSI exam.

Can a Pennsylvania electrician get a Maryland license without the exam?

Not by reciprocity. Pennsylvania isn't a Maryland partner, so you take the PSI exam. The exception: an apprenticeship approved by the federal Office of Apprenticeship, with 576 classroom and 8,000 work hours, lets you skip Maryland's journeyperson exam.

Do I still need a county license with a Maryland state license?

Often, yes. The Board says counties and cities can require their own registration before you work or pull permits. Reciprocal masters must get a local license within 60 days.
