Maryland Electrical Continuing Education: 2026 Hours and Renewal

Maryland electrical continuing education hours and license renewal - JCR Productions

Maryland electrical continuing education is 10 hours every 2 years for a master electrician, with at least 5 in a classroom. A journeyperson, a licensed electrician who works under a master's direction, needs 5 hours. Take courses from the approved CE provider list of the Maryland State Board of Electricians. Until 2021 it was the State Board of Master Electricians.

Maryland electrical continuing education: how many hours?

Masters need 10 hours each 2-year term, 5 in a classroom. Journeypersons need 5, with no classroom minimum.

  • Course time only. Prep time doesn't count.
  • Teaching credit: 1 hour per hour taught, up to 5 hours.
  • Uninsured masters: with finished CE, an uninsured master is "authorized to work" at the journeyperson level. Without it, the license is "not authorized to work."

Need CE hours? JCR CE classes are $230 for 8 hours, in person or live on Zoom, and each includes a free 8-hour online video course. JCR CE is approved in 20+ states.

What counts toward Maryland electrician CE?

Under Maryland's CE subject rule, a course must cover one of these:

  • Any article of, or update to, the National Electrical Code (NEC), including local versions
  • A National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code or standard tied to electrical work
  • NEC-based training on practical techniques or installation, from a provider state law allows, such as an approved college or apprenticeship

Can Maryland electrical CE be online?

Partly. Masters need 5 of their 10 hours in a classroom setting, a term the rule doesn't define. It doesn't say how the other 5 must be taken. Journeypersons have no classroom minimum.

Do Maryland counties have their own electrician rules?

Some do. A county may require a registration on top of your state license.

County What it requires of state-licensed masters
Baltimore County A Master General registration that expires with your state license. Since January 1, 2026, renewal takes 10 CE hours every 2 years, from courses the Maryland Department of Labor approved.
Harford County A master registration renewing April 30 of odd-numbered years. The renewal form asks for your state license, insurance certificate and photo ID.
Carroll County A 2025–2027 master registration: application, driver's license, signed copy of your state license and $70
Cecil County No master registration since July 1, 2022. Your state master license number is enough for a permit.
Prince George's County If the permit system shows your license expired after you renewed, email the county your new state license.

Of these, only Baltimore County sets CE hours for masters. Its page doesn't say whether your state CE hours also count toward them.

How do I renew a Maryland master electrician license?

  1. Finish your hours in the 24 months before your expiration date.
  2. Watch the mail. The board sends renewal instructions about 60 days before you expire.
  3. Renew online with the Maryland Department of Labor.
  4. Update county registrations, like Baltimore or Harford.

No notice a month before you expire? The board says to call 410-230-6231.
