How to Get a Delaware Electrician License

JCR Productions electrical license guide

Which license you need

  • Master: six years of full-time experience, or four years under a Master plus two years of technical training. An accepted apprenticeship certificate can replace employment-verification records.
  • Journeyperson: works under a Master, Master Special, Limited, or Limited Special. You need 8,000 hours of full-time experience under a Master to test. If you finished a state-approved apprenticeship, you don't take the exam.
  • Limited: a restricted license. You need three years of full-time work under a Master or Limited electrician.
  • Residential: 4,000 hours of full-time work under a Master or Limited electrician, or a Board-approved residential apprenticeship. Everyone takes the Residential exam.

Delaware work after June 30, 2012 only counts if you held an Apprentice or Journeyperson license while you did it. This guide doesn't cover the Master Special or Limited Special licenses.

How to apply

  1. Apply in DELPROS. Have your supervisor send the employment verification.
  2. The Board reviews your experience. Once you're approved, Prov emails you within one to two weeks to register.
  3. Book your exam through the Prov scheduler. You take one exam for the license the Board approved.
  4. After you pass, the Board gets your score within about two weeks and issues your license. Master and Limited applicants must also upload proof of at least $300,000 liability insurance through a DELPROS "Submit Additional Documentation" request.

Exams and books

Exam Questions Time Pass Fee Code and extra books
Master Electrician 80 3 hours 75% $100 2020 NEC or 2023 NEC + Ugly's 2020 + American Electrician's Handbook, 17th
Journeyperson Electrician 70 3 hours 75% $100 2020 NEC or 2023 NEC + American Electrician's Handbook, 17th
Limited Electrician 70 3 hours 75% $100 2020 NEC or 2023 NEC + American Electrician's Handbook, 17th
Residential Electrician 60 3 hours 75% $100 2020 NEC or 2023 NEC + American Electrician's Handbook, 17th

The Journeyperson book list and Master, Limited, and Residential book lists name the other approved books. Bring your own copies. Prov's exam-room rules allow permanent tabs, highlighting, and underlining done before test day. Handwritten notes and movable tabs are not allowed. Bring a simple four-function calculator. Questions about testing go to Prov at 866-720-7768.

Reciprocity and renewal

To apply by reciprocity, you need a current license of the same type from another state. Maryland and New Jersey licenses don't need proof of experience. Several other states need a form showing at least five years of work after licensure. A Pennsylvania municipal license doesn't count, so those holders test. See the Board's reciprocity instructions.

From your second renewal on, 5 of a Master or Limited electrician's 10 CE hours must cover the NEC. If you were licensed partway through a cycle, your first renewal needs fewer hours. See the CE requirements.

Study with JCR

JCR's Delaware course teaches NEC navigation, theory, and calculations for all four exams, using the 2020 NEC. It's the same curriculum behind a 93% pass rate for JCR classroom students. The American Electrician's Handbook and Ugly's need separate study.

How long to study: Most students who pass study 6–8 weeks, about an hour a night.

JCR's Delaware course ($495) includes a 152-page printed manual, 100 video lessons (21 hours), 500+ practice questions, and permanent code tabs. Code books are sold separately.
