Alaska Electrical License Renewal & CE Requirements (2026)

Alaska electrical license renewal and CE requirements - JCR Productions

Alaska electrical license renewal depends on which credential you hold. An electrical administrator license renews every 2 years, by December 31 of odd years, after one 8-hour approved continuing education (CE) workshop. A journeyman electrician's certificate of fitness also lasts 2 years and needs 16 CE hours, at least 8 on National Electrical Code (NEC) changes.

Alaska electrical administrator continuing education: how much?

One approved 8-hour workshop each 2-year license period, or the same hours from an approved correspondence or individual study program. Under 12 AAC 32.315, the code it must cover depends on your category:

  • NEC: inside communications, unlimited commercial wiring, controls and control wiring, residential wiring
  • National Electrical Safety Code (NESC): outside communications and unlimited linework

Passed a licensing exam on the right code during the period? Then you don't need CE for that renewal.

Need Alaska CE hours? JCR CE classes are $230 for 8 hours, in Raleigh, Asheville, Mooresville (Charlotte area) or live on Zoom, plus a bonus 8-hour online video course. JCR CE is approved in 20+ states. Alaska lists JCR's 8-hour class, in person or virtual, for electrical administrator CE.

  • At least 8 hours on significant changes or updates to the NEC

Alaska electrical license renewal, step by step

Electrical administrators

  1. Finish your 8 hours by December 31 of the odd year your license expires.
  2. Renew online or on the paper renewal form. The 2025 form listed a $170 fee for 2 years.
  3. Keep your certificates for 4 years. The division audits a share of renewals at random.

There's no grace period. Working on a lapsed license is illegal. CE finished after December 31 can still count if you attach the certificates, but those hours can't be reused for the next period.

Journeyman certificates of fitness

  1. Finish 16 hours in the 24 months before you apply.
  2. Apply with your certificates and the $200 renewal fee.

A certificate stops being valid for work on its expiration date. You can renew it without a new exam up to 2 years after it expires.

Can Alaska electrical CE be online?

Partly. Both rules accept approved correspondence or individual study programs. These must register participants and prove completion. For administrators, the division sets how many hours such a program earns, case by case. JCR's Alaska listing includes an 8-hour online course and live virtual class sessions.
