Eligibility, official links, and common questions
Who can qualify? Confirm current DPOR eligibility. Virginia generally requires a valid Journeyman license in the same trade for at least one year or documented practical experience.
Which references do I need? Obtain the 2020 NEC, NFPA 70E, and Virginia’s tradesman regulations listed in the current PSI bulletin. These references are separate from the included JCR manual, practice materials, and tabs. The official Virginia regulations are free online. Follow PSI’s edition, binding, tabbing, and highlighting rules.
How long should I study? Most students who pass study 6–8 weeks, about an hour a night. Then use the mock exams to find weak areas and improve lookup speed.
Could reciprocity apply? If you hold a North Carolina Intermediate or Unlimited electrical contractor license, check DPOR’s reciprocity agreement before buying exam prep. The agreement covers Virginia Master Electrical and Class A or B contractor licensing. You must meet its conditions and apply to DPOR; a license is not issued automatically.
