What JCR covers: the Idaho Journeyman and Master exams are NEC and trade-knowledge tests with no separate state law section. JCR teaches the NEC lookups, theory and calculations behind them. Study separately: the Idaho Electrical Contractor exam is a business and law test based on DOPL’s reference manual. This course does not cover it.

Steps to an Idaho license

Qualify. Journeyman: 8,000 apprentice hours plus a 4-year approved school, or 16,000 hours of experience. Master: a journeyman license held at least 4 years.
Register with PSI. Create an account on PSI’s Idaho site and pick your exam. Acceptance is automatic. Then schedule and pay $75.
Pass the exam. Bring your NEC and 2023 Ugly’s.
Apply to DOPL. Send your passing score and work verification through eDOPL.

Idaho electrician exam questions

Which NEC edition does the Idaho electrician exam use? PSI accepts the 2020 or 2023 NEC. This course teaches the 2020 NEC, so bring the 2020 edition.

Is the Idaho electrical license exam open book? Yes. Bring the NEC and the 2023 Ugly’s Electrical References.

How many questions are on the Idaho master electrician exam? 100, the same as Journeyman. You get 4.5 hours. Master needs 75%, Journeyman needs 70%.

Can I use tabs? Yes. Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are allowed if done before the exam. Post-its are not.

Who gives the exam? PSI. You register on PSI’s Idaho site, then apply to Idaho DOPL for the license after you pass.

How long should I study? 6–8 weeks, about an hour a night.
