JCR is listed on the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) Approved Tradesman Continuing Education Providers list for electrical continuing education (ELE). Virginia electricians must complete 3 hours of board-approved continuing education every 3-year renewal cycle. JCR's approved electrical CE classes satisfy that requirement.

Virginia Electrical Licenses

Virginia separates individual tradesman licenses from the contractor business license. Journeyman and Master Electrician are individual DPOR tradesman credentials. The electrical contractor license is a business credential issued through the Virginia Board for Contractors.

Journeyman Electrician

Individual tradesman credential. PSI exam: 70 questions, 210 minutes, 49 correct answers required to pass. Common path: 4 years of practical experience plus 240 hours of formal vocational training, with other DPOR-approved paths available.

Master Electrician

Top individual tradesman credential. PSI exam: 90 questions, 270 minutes, 63 correct answers required to pass. Required to qualify a Virginia electrical contractor business for the ELE specialty. View DPOR tradesman requirements →

Class A/B/C ELE Contractor

Business license for contracting electrical work. The ELE qualified individual must hold a Virginia Master Electrician license. Class A/B applicants also have a contractor business exam; all new Class A/B/C contractor applicants must complete the 8-hour pre-license business course.

Virginia Contractor Class A, B, and C Limits

Class C: single projects over $1,000 but less than $30,000, or less than $250,000 total in a 12-month period.

Class B: single projects from $30,000 to less than $150,000, or $250,000 to less than $1 million total in a 12-month period.

Class A: single projects of $150,000 or more, or $1 million or more total in a 12-month period.

Hold an NC license too? VA Reciprocity

Virginia lists a reciprocity/examination agreement for North Carolina Unlimited and Intermediate Electrical Contractor licenses. NC Unlimited is tied to the Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman license and Class A Electrical Contractor business license path; NC Intermediate is tied to the Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman license and Class B Electrical Contractor business license path. Applicants must meet all terms of the agreement, submit the required application, and provide verification of licensure from the out-of-state board.
