The three NC licenses:
- Limited: up to $60,000 per project, on equipment rated 1,000 volts or less. Requires 3,000 total experience hours, including at least 2,000 primary hours (1 year).
- Intermediate: up to $150,000 per project. Requires 5,750 total experience hours, including at least 5,000 primary hours (2.5 years).
- Unlimited: no project-value cap. Requires 9,000 total experience hours, including at least 8,000 primary hours (4 years).

The NC exam process
Apply to NCBEEC and receive Board approval before scheduling with PSI. The approval letter identifies your classification and 90-day authorization period; PSI sends the eligibility email used to book the test.

Books and exam-day rules
Open book: the 2020 NEC, the 2013 NFPA 72 where required, and the NASCLA Contractors Guide, North Carolina Electrical 14th edition.
JCR tabs can go into the North Carolina exam. They’re permanent tabs, which the Board allows. Apply them at least 48 hours before test day. Post-it flags and homemade tabs aren’t allowed.
Business and law: You may bring the NASCLA North Carolina Electrical guide into the exam. Bring the 14th edition, the only edition allowed since June 16, 2026 (buy it from NASCLA). Questions on NC licensing law and Board rules are closed book, so study them before test day.
