North Carolina Electrical Exam Prep Self-Study

Prepare for your North Carolina Limited, Intermediate, or Unlimited electrical licensing exam with JCR's complete self-study exam prep bundle — built in NC, for the NC exam, since 1985.

This bundle includes our exam prep manual, online study videos, codebook tabs, printed mock exams, and digital practice tools built around the 2020 NEC — the edition the NCBEEC exam tests on.

It also covers what most exam prep skips: the closed-book NC business, law, and project-management questions. No codebook can save you on those — preparation can.

Most successful students study between 4–8 weeks.

The NC exam at a glance

Administered by PSI at centers in Asheville, Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Winston-Salem. Apply to the NCBEEC first ($125); your approval opens a 90-day window covering one attempt. Passing score: 70%. A failed exam means a three-month wait and a new application.

Open book vs. closed book — know the difference

Open book: 2020 NEC and 2013 NFPA 72 (your own copies, permanent tabs only, no writing in them during the exam).

Closed book: NC Licensing Law (G.S. 87, Art. 4), Board Rules (21 NCAC 18B), and the NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law and Project Management: NC Electrical Edition. This bundle's business and law instruction covers that territory.

Which license: Limited, Intermediate, or Unlimited?

Limited — single projects to $50,000. Intermediate — to $130,000. Unlimited — no cap, the standard for commercial work. Higher tiers mean broader exam coverage and harder questions. Full requirements: ncbeec.org.
