The three NC licenses:
- Limited: up to $60,000 and 600 volts per project. Requires 3,000 total experience hours, including at least 2,000 primary hours (1 year).
- Intermediate: up to $150,000 per project. Requires 5,750 total experience hours, including at least 5,000 primary hours (2.5 years).
- Unlimited: no project-value cap. Requires 9,000 total experience hours, including at least 8,000 primary hours (4 years).

Exam Information:
The NC exam process
Apply to NCBEEC and receive Board approval before scheduling with PSI. The approval letter identifies your classification and 90-day authorization period; PSI sends the eligibility email used to book the test.

Open-book vs. closed-book material
Open book: approved technical references such as the 2020 NEC and, where required, the 2013 NFPA 72.
JCR tab status for the North Carolina exam: Not approved for exam-day use. NCBEEC names Redi-Tag Self-Stick Permanent Adhesive Index Tabs as acceptable and prohibits self-made tabbing. JCR's printed Avery 16282 labels are not the named Redi-Tag product, so use JCR tabs for study only and use the NCBEEC-listed Redi-Tag tabs for the exam.
