New Mexico electrical license renewal and CE requirements fact card - JCR Productions

New Mexico electrical license renewal takes 16 hours of approved continuing education (CE) every 3 years for an EE-98J journeyman electrician or EL-1J journeyman lineman. At least 8 of the 16 must be code change instruction on the code New Mexico enforces now, the 2020 New Mexico Electrical Code, which adopts the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC). New Mexico electrical continuing education: how many hours?

Sixteen hours before each renewal, under 14.6.4.8 NMAC:

  • 8 or more of code change. These must cover the code CID enforces for your certificate.
  • The rest: other approved industry-related courses, or more code hours.
  • Reinstating? The same 16 hours apply.

The CID's CE page applies the 16 hours to every 3-year period.

Need CE hours? JCR CE classes are $230 for 8 hours, in Raleigh, Asheville, Mooresville (Charlotte area) or live on Zoom, plus a bonus 8-hour online video course. JCR CE is approved in 20+ states.

For New Mexico credit, first check that the course is current on the CID's approved course list.

What counts as code change CE in New Mexico?

  • A CID-approved course. Approval lasts 3 years and lapses if the course isn't offered for 24 months in a row.
  • Taught by an approved instructor. Approvals are specific to the trade and code taught.
  • On the current code. Today that's the 2020 New Mexico Electrical Code, based on the 2020 NEC.

The approved course list marks each course's type (such as code change) and the certificates it's approved for, like EE-98J or EL-1J.

How does New Mexico electrical license renewal work?

  1. Watch the mail. CID or its vendor mails a renewal form at least 30 days before your certificate expires. Renewing on time is your job even if it never arrives.
  2. Attach proof of your 16 hours. A renewal without it is incomplete and won't be processed.
  3. Send it to PSI, the vendor that processes CID renewals, with the fee. CID's fee page lists $75 for journeyman certificates.

The filing date is the postmark, or the day CID gets it if you hand-deliver it. A late or rejected renewal means a suspended certificate that can be cancelled.
