Louisiana electrician continuing education is a state rule only for residential building contractors, who need 6 hours a year. Continuing education (CE) means approved classes you take to keep a license active. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) licenses electrical contractors under its commercial license, and its FAQ says commercial license holders have no CE requirement. Some cities license electricians too. New Orleans, for one, renews its electrician licenses every year.
| Quick facts | Louisiana electrician CE |
|---|---|
| Who needs CE | Residential building contractors: 6 hours a year |
| Electrical contractors | Commercial license, needed for electrical jobs over $10,000. No CE requirement. |
| Required topics | No set NEC, safety or law hours. Courses must relate to construction. |
| Approved courses | Only board-approved courses from providers on the LSLBC provider list |
| Online | Allowed when the provider and course are board-approved (CE standards) |
| Reporting | The provider sends the board a roster. You keep your certificate 5 years. |
| JCR approval | JCR's Louisiana page lists LSLBC approvals. JCR isn't on the board's online list (see below). |
Who needs Louisiana electrician continuing education?
At the state level, only residential building contractors. The LSLBC sets no CE for commercial, mold or home improvement licenses.
- Residential building contractor: 6 hours each year from a board-approved provider.
- Exemption: a residential contractor who also holds a current commercial license in building construction, highway, street and bridge, heavy construction, or municipal and public works meets the 6 hours.
- Electrical contractor: a commercial license, with no CE.
- Journeyman or master electrician: check your city. New Orleans issues these licenses, and its pages list no CE.
Need CE hours? JCR's CE class costs $230 for 8 hours in Raleigh, Asheville, Mooresville (Charlotte area) or live on Zoom, and a bonus 8-hour online video course comes with it. JCR CE is approved in 20+ states.
What counts toward Louisiana contractor CE?
- Approved first: both the provider and the course must be approved by the board before the class.
- Topics: tied to construction, such as building codes, electrical contracting, safety, business or contracts. Product sales pitches don't count.
- Hour length: 50 minutes of instruction per credit hour.
- Paperwork: the provider files a roster with your name, the last 4 digits of your Social Security number and the name on your license. You get a certificate within 30 days.
How to renew a Louisiana contractor license
- Watch for notices. The LSLBC emails or mails them about 60 days and 15 days before expiration.
- Renew online in the LSLBC contractor portal. Choose a 1-, 2- or 3-year renewal.
- Send proof of insurance for residential licenses, as the FAQ requires.
- Don't wait a year. A license expired for 1 year can't be renewed. You'd apply for a new one.
See the board's renewal page for details.
