Kansas electrical continuing education is set by your city or county, because Kansas has no statewide electrician license. State law (K.S.A. 12-1526) requires every local licensing office to ask for at least 12 hours every 2 years, or 6 a year, with at least half on code education. Continuing education (CE) means approved classes you take to keep a license active. Johnson County and Wichita/Sedgwick County set their own hour rules under that law.

How Kansas electrical continuing education works
Any Kansas city or county that licenses electricians must follow K.S.A. 12-1526:
- Hours: at least 12 every 2 years, or 6 every year.
- Code: at least half must be code education.
- Subjects: all hours cover construction, maintenance or code updates.
- Providers: the local office approves courses. It may not cap the number of providers.
A license renewed on completed CE carries a notation that proves it, and that license is valid in other Kansas cities that license electricians.
Need CE hours? JCR's CE class is $230 for 8 hours in Raleigh, Asheville, Mooresville (Charlotte area) or live on Zoom. Each class comes with a bonus 8-hour online video course. JCR CE is approved in 20+ states.
Johnson County electrical CE
Johnson County's Class DE license covers electrical work. Each qualified individual (QI), the licensed person who qualifies a company's license, needs 8 CE hours per license classification each calendar year.
- Approved classes: the county posts a yearly approved class list. Approvals last only for the calendar year (course approvals).
- Outside classes: no credit until you send the county your certificate of completion.
- Online: no self-paced courses. A live online class counts only with your camera on for the whole class.
- Late arrival: miss more than 60 minutes of an 8-hour class and you get no credit.
- County classes: free single-day Zoom sessions for Johnson County QIs in April, May, June, August and September. Last-chance classes run November through February at $30 per credit hour.
Wichita and Sedgwick County electrical CE
The Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) issues journeyman and master certificates that last 2 years.
- Hours: 12 by the date your certificate expires, with 3 trade hours and 3 general hours each year.
- Proof: bring the original certificates. MABCD doesn't get copies from providers.
- Renewal fee: $35.
- Late renewal: January 1 to March 31 is a grace period. After that, extra hours apply: 1.5 from April 1, 3 from July 1, and 4.5 from September 1.
How to renew a Kansas electrical license
- Find your licensing office. Your city or county sets the hours and the deadline.
- Take approved classes before your license expires, with half on the code.
- Renew with that office. Johnson County licenses last 1 year. Renewal is $225 per license type, and a $75 late fee applies on February 1. MABCD certificates renew online every 2 years for $35.
