South Carolina Electrical Contractor Exam Prep - Self-Study Course (2020 NEC)
Prep for South Carolina's electrical contractor exams - open-book tests of the 2020 NEC, where code navigation speed decides who passes. South Carolina licenses electrical work at the contractor level, with PSI trade exams for both the commercial and residential paths. The commercial electrical contractor exam is 80 questions with 56 correct required to pass. Open-book exams are won on code navigation speed - the core skill this course trains, using the Code Made Simple method JCR has used to prepare 20,000+ electricians since 1985.
What's included
- 152-page JCR Exam Prep Manual: a unit-by-unit study path with a six-week schedule, video prompts, guided practice, and answer keys. It covers NEC navigation, test-taking strategy, Ohm's Law, electrical formulas, ampacity, overcurrent protection, dwelling and service calculations, grounding and bonding, boxes, raceways, conduit fill, motors, appliances, special occupancies, NFPA 72, and math review.
- 100 study videos spanning 20+ hours: step-by-step instruction across the major exam topics - follow the manual, pause, rewind, and revisit difficult calculations as often as needed.
- 500+ realistic mock exam questions: practice on paper with the Mock Exam Booklet and online with JCR's digital mock exam app to build code-search speed, test your timing, and find weak areas before exam day.
- JCR code book tabs: permanent tabs - the only kind PSI allows in the exam room - that take you straight to heavily tested NEC articles, tables, and sections.
- NASCLA-based Business & Law unit: a dedicated manual unit, five business videos, and practice questions covering contracts, insurance and bonding, business structures, estimating, lien law, and OSHA - the same NASCLA framework South Carolina's Business Management & Law exam is drawn from.
These are the same core JCR curriculum materials used by our classroom students, who pass at a 93% rate.

- Pass the required Business Management & Law exam (see FAQ below).
- Submit your license application to the state with your exam results, experience, and financial documentation.
South Carolina Exam Prep FAQ
What about the Business Management & Law exam?
South Carolina requires it in addition to your trade exam. It's an open-book exam drawn from the NASCLA Contractor's Guide to Business, Law and Project Management (South Carolina edition). This bundle already includes NASCLA-based business and law instruction covering the national fundamentals - contracts, insurance and bonding, business structures, estimating, and lien law - and dedicated South Carolina-edition B&L study materials are in development. For the exam itself, get the NASCLA South Carolina guide and tab it thoroughly - it's open book and the guide is the source.
Can I take the NASCLA Accredited Electrical exam instead?
Yes - South Carolina accepts the NASCLA Accredited Examination for Electrical Contractors, which more than a dozen states recognize. It's also NEC-based, so this course's code navigation training applies to either exam.
I already hold a North Carolina electrical license - do I still need the trade exam?
Possibly not. South Carolina has an electrical exam waiver agreement with North Carolina for qualifying license holders - you may only need to pass the Business Management & Law exam. Check with the SC Contractor's Licensing Board before ordering.
Do I need my own code book?
Yes. The exam is open book, and you'll want your own 2020 NEC tabbed and highlighted before exam day. Our tabbing guide shows you exactly how.
How long should I study?
Most successful students study for 4-8 weeks. Start with the manual and video lessons, then use the 500+ question mock exams to find weak spots and build code-search speed.
