Hawaii Electrician License Guide

Apply, get approved, schedule
Submit your Board application for approval before registering with PSI. Your approval letter gives you two years of exam eligibility.

NEC supplied at testing
PSI supplies the 2020 NEC. You cannot bring personal reference books into the exam room. PSI’s approved exam and study references.
JCR fit
2020 NEC technical core
JCR teaches code navigation and calculations. Hawaii’s license definitions explain the work each credential allows; PSI’s reference list identifies exam-room and home-study books.
Important: Hawaii electrician licensing and renewal training have separate requirements. This exam-prep purchase does not replace the Board’s experience, education, or renewal requirements.

Each exam name opens its PSI outline. All seven require 70% to pass.
- Journey Worker Electrician (EJ) — 70 questions; 180 minutes.
- Journey Worker Industrial Electrician (EJI) — 70 questions; 180 minutes.
- Journey Worker Specialty Electrician (EJS) — 50 questions; 120 minutes.
- Maintenance Electrician (EM) — 50 questions; 120 minutes.
- Supervising Electrician (ES) — 70 questions; 180 minutes.
- Supervising Industrial Electrician (ESI) — 70 questions; 180 minutes.
- Supervising Specialty Electrician (ESS) — 50 questions; 120 minutes.

Which books can you use?
In the exam room: PSI supplies the 2020 NEC for all seven exams. Personal books are not allowed.
For home study: the bulletin also lists the 2017 National Electrical Safety Code, Ugly’s Electrical References (2020), and OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926 (or PSI’s selected OSHA text). EJ and ES add NFPA 72 (2016); EJS and ESS add NTC Blue Book – Low Voltage Systems Handbook (2020). These additional references are not permitted in the exam room.

Apply to the Board
Download the application and electrician experience-verification forms. Submit the education and experience records listed in the instructions; wait for your Board approval letter.
Register with PSI
After approval, open PSI’s Hawaii registration page, choose View Available Tests, select your approved exam, and use Sign In / Create Account. The PSI account instructions show each step.

Which NEC edition is used for Hawaii electrician exams?
All seven exams use the 2020 NEC supplied by PSI. PSI’s reference rules prohibit personal reference books in the testing room.
How long is Hawaii exam eligibility valid?
The Hawaii Board of Electricians and Plumbers’ exam instructions give candidates two years of exam eligibility from the approval-letter date.
Does JCR satisfy Hawaii renewal training?
This purchase is exam prep. For renewal education, the Board’s continuing-competency page lists Honolulu Community College and the Hawaii Electricians Training Fund, plus submission instructions.
