Fulfills 6 Classroom hours for North Carolina, Kentucky’s Contractor, & Florida’s BSP (Business Practice), WC (Workers’ Comp), and WPS (Workplace Safety)
This is a 6 hour course for new to experienced electricians. Using knowledge from building his own corporation, VH Ring Electrical Contracting, you will get the benefit of learning from an instructor with first-hand experience. Learn the elements of a written business plan, business organization types, insurance needs, financials, estimating and bidding, office functions, etc. Leave class with new knowledge that you can start incorporating right away!
Learning Objectives:
Understand the fundamental framework to any contractor business.
Understand your business operations responsibilities including employee protocols, inventory, and daily operational tasks.
Understand the growth process in operations from one to 15 plus employees.
Understand OSHA guidelines and their effects on your business structure.
Understand liability and the application of electrical safety protocols as they affect your business structure, operations, and profitability.

Outline of Workshop
Fundamental Framework
Taking a mock-company, this section covers creating a solid business plan, choosing an appropriate organization type/structure, and establishing general liability, workman’s compensation and surety insurance, as well as banking and licensing needs.
Start-Up Tasks
Continuing from the fundamental framework portion, this section covers the action steps for starting to earn revenue, including marketing, time management methods, delegation of tasks and subcontracting, and financial accounting systems.
Business Protection & Liabilities
Business, employee, and client insurance needs are covered, in addition to bonding needs. All main forms of bonding are reviewed.
Estimating Projects & Tasks
Using a blueprint for the mock-company’s first big contract opportunity, this portion of the class covers estimating for cost including profit and bidding on the job. Estimating methods are discussed as well as inventory control.
Daily Operations
As the business builds, human resources, supervision, administrative functions, and delegation of tasks to office staff is covered.
Growth & Reputation
Putting all the business management discussion together, this section discusses the three large steps in any company and expectations including liability, assets, and restructuring of the company that may occur. Reputation in regards to state licensing laws and company development is discussed, too.
OSHA & NFPA 70E Considerations
Focusing on the business requirements to be compliant with work place safety standards; OSHA 29 CFR for PPE and certification standards and the NFPA-70E, Electrical Safety Guidelines including lock-out take-out procedures to discuss the importance of solid business foundations are discussed throughout the workshop.
